IMPORTANT INSTALLATION NOTES

IF YOU ARE USING KEY DISK TERMINATOR (KDT), THIS INSTALLATION WILL FAIL. IF YOU ATTEMPT TO INSTALL PEAK WITH KDT ON ANY ATTACHED HARD DRIVE, YOUR PEAK AUTHORIZATION DISK WILL BE CORRUPTED. BIAS IS NOT OBLIGATED TO REPLACE KEY DISKS DAMAGED BY USE OF KDT. IF YOU ARE USING KDT, DELETE IT FROM YOUR SYSTEM, RESTART YOUR MACINTOSH HOLDING DOWN THE SHIFT KEY TO DISABLE EXTENSIONS, THEN INSTALL PEAK. YOU MAY NOT DISABLE IT USING THE EXTENSIONS MANAGER OR OTHER SOFTWARE. UNLESS EVERY FILE RELATED TO KDT IS DELETED FROM YOUR HARD DRIVE, AUTHORIZATION OF PEAK WILL FAIL.
1. Peak requires that you have both QuickTime 2.0 or later installed, MathLib (Power Macintosh only) and that you have Apple’s Sound Manager 3.0 or later. All of these are available for downloading on Apple’s ftp and web support pages, and come with System 7.5.1 or later. If you cannot access online support via the internet, contact your local Macintosh dealer for System Software. If you plan to create and open compressed audio documents using Peak, you must have Sound Manager 3.2 or later. We also highly recommend that you use a color monitor with Peak, set to 256 colors.
2. Please always leave about 300-500k free for the Sound Manager to allocate sound channels. This means that you should set Peak’s application RAM in the “Get Info.. window from the Finder to approximately 500k less than the total free RAM reported in the “About This Macintosh” window from the Finder. For instance, if your Macintosh has 8MB free in the “About This Macintosh” Dialog, you can set Peak’s application RAM up to 7.7MB in “Get Info...” window from the Finder.
3. If you are not using Digidesign hardware for audio input/output in Peak, you can ignore this note. At the time of this release, Digidesign reported that they had not yet completed testing of their Sound Manager Drivers version 1.4x. As a result, Digidesign was unable to provide BIAS with the System Extensions that enable their audio hardware on this installer.
• Version 1.31 of the Sound Manager drivers is compatible with most versions of the Digidesign hardware and is available on many online services. Version 1.31 works with Audiomedia, Sound Tools, and other Digidesign cards. However, version 1.4x is required for the Digidesign ProTools 3 system to function properly with Apple’s Sound Manager. Contact BIAS for more information, or visit the BIAS web site at http://www.bias-inc.com to download the required system extensions.
• Version 1.42 is the current recommended version to use with PCI ProTools III or AudioMedia III hardware. Please follow the installation procedure for these cards, which must include all of the following steps: 1) throwing away the Sound Preferences, DigiSetup file (located in the System Folder), and 2) Zapping the PRAM of your machine after you install the drivers. To zap the PRAM of your Machine, Command-Option-P-R keys must all be held down at once while your Macintosh boots up-- if you successfully zap the PRAM, you will hear the Mac rechime.
4. If you are running a demonstration version of the software, you will be unable to save documents, use External Samplers, Import CD tracks, or use Peak’s Apple Event™ automation.
5. Power Macintosh users may need to install MathLib into their extensions folder. If Peak reports a -2807 error when launching, then you are missing one of the following System Extensions: QuickTime™ PowerPlug, MathLib, or Sound Manager. These files can be found on your System Software installer disks, Apple's support site http://www.support.apple.com, or by visiting our technical support page at http://www.bias-inc.com.

Peak 1.61 Changes
==============
1. Greatly improved Change Duration feature for Stereo documents no longer loses the stereo image. Change Duration also doesn't crash at end of long Change Durations.
2. Premiere Plug-In support has been improved in Peak 1.61 for some newer products. Specifically, the FetchRoutine is now clip-relative, corrects a frame/byte bug, and is compatible with Opcode and Arboretum products. Peak now supports the InstanceData implementation for Premiere 4.2 compatibility.
3. Auto-Zero detect is now much faster and will not crash.
4. The Notepad feature works on multiple recording passes, not just the first.
5. The Envelope Editor dialog now shows the selected audio accurately.
6. Playlists from Previous Versions work with 1.61. Peak 1.60 could not read playlists generated by Peak 1.53 or earlier.
7. When zoomed in at the sample level, sometimes the Horizontal Slider Control would not behave as expected. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.61.
8. Clicking in an audio window to make a selection had a problem with latency and could fall "behind the mouse" on previous versions of Peak. This problem has been corrected in Peak 1.61.

Peak 1.60 Changes
==============
1. Peak 1.60 adds direct support for AKAI S1000, S2000, and S3000 Samplers.
2. Peak 1.60 adds direct support for Roland S-760 Samplers.
3. Peak 1.60 increases SMDI throughput by almost 1000% for many samplers, including E-mu and Kurzweil samplers.
4. Peak 1.60 supports creating mono, stereo, 8 and 16 bit System 7 Sound Resources. Earlier versions were limited to 8-bit mono files only.
5. Peak 1.60 sets the default "Save As..." dialog for Audio CD Importing to a hard drive rather than the CD-Rom, which cannot be saved to.
6. Peak 1.60 has a new Sampler... dialog in the Preferences Menu. Use this dialog to control offsets for loop points sent/received with samplers that are off-by-one.
7. Peak 1.60 sets the default "Save As..." dialog for Recording to be the hard drive that was recorded onto by default.
8. Recording longer sound files (45 minutes or longer) now creates an AIFF file of the proper length in Peak 1.60. This bug was not fixed in version 1.53, as had been reported.
9. "Save As" and "Save" File menu operations for Playlists behave as expected in Peak 1.60.
10. Peak 1.60 supports new memory management feature in the new Waves Waveshell-P 2.3.1. BIAS strongly recommends that you use the Waveshell-P 2.3.1 with Peak 1.60 or later.
11. Peak 1.60 has an entirely revised Scratch Disks... dialog that provides a better user interface. Scratch disk preferences are now saved to the Peak Preferences file in Peak 1.60.
12. Regions are automatically numbered incrementally when using the Peak 1.60 "New Region" command.
13. QuickTime Movie tracks, including text and video, are preserved when using the "Save As..." or Batch File Processing features in Peak 1.60 after modifying a QuickTime movie audio track.
14. The Envelope Editor dialogs in Peak 1.60 correctly center the waveform display in the dialog. Previous version showed the audio waveform slightly off center.
15. Peak 1.60 correctly stores and recalls Preroll and Postroll Preferences.
16. Vertical Zooming no longer afffects an overview in Peak 1.60.
17. Default file names displayed in the "Save As..." dialog now match the title of the audio document.
18. Problems with the Phase Vocoder returning -39 end of file errors when doing time compression have been resolved.
19. Crossfades out of playlist regions work correctly in Peak 1.60 Playlists.
20. Up to 32,000 Temporary Files are removed from disks when Peak 1.60 quits. Earlier versions would only remove a maximum of 99 temporary files.
21. Peak 1.60 fixed a problem that would limit the number of .WAV or QuickTime files that could be opened or batch processed.
1. Peak 1.54 works as the External Editor now for MOTU's Digital Performer and Steinberg's Cubase Audio/VST.
2. Snap-selection feature works correctly in Peak 1.54. Previous versions would not always snap the selection to the correct zero crossing.
3. Saving and closing windows had a bug in previous versions that could sometimes close the wrong window. This problem has been resolved in Peak 1.54.
4. The Transport is now hidden while opening files with the Open... command in the File menu in Peak 1.54.
5. View and Selection Memory has been added in Peak 1.54, storing up to 32 previous zoom and selection settings per audio document. To toggle between previous views and selections, press CMD + [left arrow] or CMD + [right arrow]. The left arrow restores previous views, and the right arrow restores views stored after previous views were recalled.
6. Option-dragging in the Overview allows you to navigate within the overview without initiating playback.
Peak 1.53 Changes
March 29, 1997
===============
1. Selecting audio no longer requires screen redraws and is much faster in Peak 1.53.
2. Audio document windows can no longer go off the edge or bottom of the screen.
3. Batch File Processing can now save 8 bit sounds. Previous versions only saved 16 bit sound files, regardless of 8 bit settings.
4. Old Peak display modes (e.g., Min/Max, Average, etc.) no longer show up in the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog.
5. "New Document from Playlist" creates audio documents with a sample rate corresponding to the playlist now.
6. The Premiere Envelope dialog shows -100% at the top of the dialog, and 0% at the bottom now.
7. "Old Tempo" and "New Tempo" settings in the Change Duration dialog were reversed and are correct now.
8. Export Regions now saves 8 bit files as previous version of Peak created only 16 bit files using Export Regions.
9. Export Regions allows playlist regions instead of regular regions (any audio between two adjacent markers) to be exported.
10. New Sonic AIFF file format supported.
11. AIFF Files with Application Specific Chunks are now preserved when saving.
12. Plug-In memory management has been optimized in Peak 1.53.
13. The Select-To-Marker feature in Peak 1.53 allows you to select from the current selection or insertion point up to a marker position by CMD-SHIFT-clicking between the insertion point or selection and a marker.
14. The Snap-Selection feature in Peak 1.53 allows you to automatically snap a selection to the nearest zero crossings by holding CMD-OPT while making a selection.
15. The Phase Vocoder in Peak 1.53 keeps maintains the volume of the processed audio.
16. Peak 1.53 adds Six User Definable Colors for the Colors... dialog.
17. Pressing the "Cancel" button during a long Find Peak... command works as expected in Peak 1.53.
18. SMDI Samplers can rearrange memory for up to 15 seconds in Peak 1.53 before a timeout occurs.
19. In earlier versions of Peak 1.5, pasting audio into a new document when blending was turned on could cause an error. This affected SMDI Receive as well as Export Regions.
20. Ensoniq Samplers communicate more reliably with Peak in version 1.53.
21. Recording longer sound files (45 minutes or longer) now creates an AIFF file of the proper length in Peak 1.53.
Peak 1.52 Changes
March 3, 1997

1. Control -left arrow and Control-right arrow zoom in and zoom out of the audio document horizontally.
2. Peak 1.52 allocates more Macintosh master memory pointers to help alleviate plug-in out-of memory errors.
3. Tech Support number in this Read-Me has been corrected.
4. In some circumstances, Peak 1.52 will handle Plug-in out of memory conditions handled better.
5. The Transport no longer disappears after selecting a plug-in or DSP process.
6. Invalid playlists no longer cause a crash when they are aborted during the opening procedure.
7. The "CLOS" Apple Event now closes the audio document window even if a reduction file was recalculated for it.
8. The Control-Space playback feature with preroll/postroll now works as documented in the user's guide.
9. New marker locating keypress feature allows you to type a few characters that correspond to a marker, region, or loop's name and Peak will automatically scroll to the marker. If you hit Enter or Return after typing the characters, Peak will also place the insertion point at the marker after scrolling to bring the marker into view. If more than one marker is matched to the characters typed in, Peak will locate to the first marker. Numerical entries work only from the keypad, not from the number keys above the QWERTY strip of keys, which are reserved for playing back audio document windows.
10. New option-DELETE command from keyboard deletes only the markers, loops, or regions in the current audio selection.
11. Export Regions does not save new windows with random compression types.
12. Import Dual Mono works correctly in Peak 1.52, and did not ask for two files in previous versions.
Peak 1.51 Changes
February 12, 1997

1. New PACE authorization software provides a greatly improved end-user experience with far fewer opportunities for losing installs, and more flexible authorization options.
2. Saving System 7 Sound Files from a stereo audio document no longer crashes.
3. The button for "New Folder" in the Save As... dialog shows up correctly now.
4. Command-clicking between markers to select an area in longer files works correctly now.
5. Miscellaneous -43 errors resolved when saving audio documents.
6. Compression Type settings saved in Batch Script files restore properly when loaded now.
7. Premiere processes in the Batch Processor use the correct settings when restored from a Batch Script file.
8. Plug-In Preferences now allow up to 4096k for the plug-in RAM reserve.
9. Applying realtime DSP effects to playlist items is more reliable in Peak 1.51.
10. Receiving samples from Ensoniq Samplers works properly in Peak 1.51.
11. Saving a file that was opened using Import Dual Mono prompts for saving with the "Save As..." dialog in Peak 1.51.
12. The Batch File Processor properly reports System 7 sounds instead of "Unsupported" at the bottom of the Batch File Processor dialog.
